Dementia Care

Secure Environment

“Commitment to care with dignity.”

The Story of Nick & Ann

About Us

Leigh Road Cottage is a 30 bed specialist dementia care rest home that has southern views over Whangateau Harbour and Omaha Bay while having rural views to the North. We are set on more than 2 hectares of land with native bush and hills. Our private and secure landscaped garden provides safety for the residents to have the freedom to come and go indoors and outdoors as they please.

Nature & Animals

They can enjoy watching the birds and guinea fowls playing in the court yards and native bushes. Sensory gardens, a chicken coop and many other features provide freedom and instil a feeling of peace for all our residents. These areas are very functional with unrestricted access designed specifically to support the people with dementia.

We have dedicated activity coordinators who organise activities, such as arts and crafts, gardening, walking to the beach, van outings, exercise and sing along music. Our activities result in social interaction which enriches the resident’s physical and mental well-being.

Nursing Care

Our nursing care provides a 24/7 supervision for our residents. Our approach to nursing care is based on the use of personalised care plans. Drawn up with the individuals we support and their families, our care plans will help ensure that each person we look after is treated with respect and that their independence and choices are maximised.

Our Home

Leigh Road Cottage is a wonderful home that provides secure dementia level care.

We have one wing (Hihi) holding a capacity for ten people, with its own dining room, lounge and access to a variety of gardens and the great outdoors. There are two other wings (Kereru and Takahe) that support up to 20 people, also requiring secure dementia level care. They have their own dining room, a lounge, large decks and easy access to the gardens.

Our Philosophy

We aim to promote participation in daily life, thus enhancing health and well-being. He kotuku rerenga tahi – a treasured and precious guest or visitor.

Activity Coordinator

We have the privilege of having a very skilled activity coordinator working at Leigh Road Cottage. She leads the activity program which is tailored to suit each individual that lives with us. The activity coordinator also plays a major role in on-going staff education. There are also three skilled registered nurses that dedicate their time and skills to all our residents here at Leigh Road Cottage.

“My mum is the best she has ever been emotionally and that is because she is cared for by angels.”

“It was great to see my dad outside raking the leaves in the garden when I arrived, and not sitting inside.”

“I just want to thank you all for taking such good care of my dad. Thank you for calling Mental Health Services, and for giving me the chance to be there too.  I think that was the most thorough evaluation he has had, going right back to the neurologist who first diagnosed him.  I hope the changes make a difference, as I’m sure you do too.  Thank you – I know my dad couldn’t be in better hands.”

“Thank you for encouraging my dad to use skype!  It is great to see him more regularly even though we live overseas.  He seems really settled at Leigh Road Cottage now.  You are all amazing!”

“Wow you have such wonderful staff.  They really care.  I love seeing them having a cuppa with dad talking about stuff.  It just looks like something normal!”

“We all get a lot of pleasure even just watching the birds feeding and I’ve noticed that mum’s compassion and sense of connection with wildlife is now greatly heightened…”

Check out our sister rest home situated in Orewa, Auckland. Milton Court is a boutique home providing residential and dementia care to our residents. It is one street back from the beach. The home is set in a relaxed landscape, with lovely courtyard gardens view-able from lounges, bedrooms, and the dining room.
